Statement to voters
My name is Martyn Rawlinson, I have been Councillor for the Fishwick and Frenchwood ward since 2019, and previously for Fishwick ward since 2008.
Full statement
As Deputy Leader of Preston Council I have worked hard to protect Fishwick and Frenchwood from the effects of funding cuts to local services by the Conservative government and Conservative led Lancashire County Council.
Preston Labour's economic policy, the 'Preston Model' has trapped hundreds of millions of pounds in the local economy and become the best place to live and work in the north west according to independent research. We have also protected and enhanced support for charities and groups working in Fishwick and Frenchwood like the Foxton Centre, Sahara, Preston Community Hub and more. Labour Councillors have secured improvements to green spaces and play areas at Smith's Rec, Fishwick Rec and won £2million for a significant upgrade to Waverley Park which serves many Fishwick residents.
I have seen increased concern over traffic issues in the area and supported the petition for improvements to the crossing on Manchester Road near the college. I will oppose further expansion of Newman College due to the ongoing negative impact on traffic, parking and road safety. 2024 will also see the introduction of a new residents parking permit scheme around Devonshire Place which I have long campaigned for.
Recently I have spoken publicly in support of residents deeply concerned about the situation in Gaza, despite huge pressure to stay silent. I will always fight any injustice that affects my constituents.
PLEDGES: ✓ Publicly oppose the war on Gaza ✓ Work with Newman College on parking issues and road safety ✓ Protect Council support for local groups ✓ Seek further improvements to local green space and play areas ✓ Seek funding for improved street/alleyway cleaning
