Statement to voters

Introducing Alex Powell: Your Green Candidate for Oxford City Council.

Full statement

Alex moved to East Oxford in 2021 and has been an active member of the local community since then. In his day job, Alex is a Principal Lecturer in Law and Programme Lead at Oxford Brookes University, where his research focuses on the UK’s approach to recognising and protecting refugees. In this role, he has pushed for a shift in the UK’s narrative on migration from one of hostility to one of dignity and has sought to bring together legal practitioners and people with lived experience to explore methods of resisting harmful government policies such as the plan to remove those seeking protection to Rwanda.

If elected, Alex will focus on:

- Pushing for greater protection of South Park during large scale public events.

- Pushing the City Council further in protecting and providing for refugees and migrants. Including, supporting moves towards full City of Sanctuary Accreditation.

- Addressing fly-tipping and arguing for more action to keep the streets of St Clement’s clean and safe.

- Taking action of road and cycle safety.

- Pushing for the creation of council hardship funds to support residents struggling with the cost of living.

Alex has been an active member of the Green party since 2015, and currently sits a member of the Green Party Trade Union Group Committee. While at Oxford Brookes, he is an active member of the University and College Union (UCU) and the Migration and Refugees network, where he sits on the steering committee. His priorities for St Clement’s center on the links between environmental and social justice.

More Green councillors will allow us to build on the achievements of the 6 current Green councillors such as getting the council to publicly campaign for rent controls and getting the council to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Alex is a hard working campaigner who will stand up for residents and ensure that your views are heard in the council chamber.
